KUWAIT SUMMONS TOP US DIPLOMAT OVER RAINBOW INCIDENT

Kuwait City: A U.S. Embassy tweet of President Joe Biden's rainbow-flagfestooned message in celebration of Pride Month drew a diplomatic protest from Kuwait and triggered a rare Twitter dispute between the two close allies. On Friday, US ambassadors increased their use of rainbow flags and social media posts in support of LGBTQ rights. The messages seemed in response to the Kuwaiti government's official criticism the day before to what Kuwait's state news agency referred to as the US Embassy's "pro-gay rights post.""

The United States stands with the LGBTQI+ community all throughout the world," State Department spokesman Ned Price said in a pointed retweet of the embassy's original offending Pride Month statement on Friday. The feud erupted after the US Embassy in Kuwait dubbed Biden a champion of LGBTQI rights in a tweet on Thursday.

"All human beings, regardless of who they are or whom they love, should be treated with respect and dignity and should be able to live without fear," it stated. According to the narrative on Kuwait's state news agency, the Foreign Ministry summoned acting embassy charge d'affaires James Holtsnider late that night to "assert its rejection of the appointment." According to the Kuwaiti news agency, a Foreign Ministry official, Nawaf Al Ahmad, issued Holtsnider a formal objection "as well as emphasising the requirement for the embassy to obey the country's laws and rules." According to Human Rights Watch, consensual same-sex relationships between men in Kuwait are punishable by up to seven years in prison.
