MASSIVE METHANE EMISSIONS FROM RUSSIAN COAL MINE

  • 15/06/2022

A Canadian company that maintains circling methane sensors claims to have discovered the largest methane output from a single facility it has ever observed.

On 14 January, a leak was observed from the massive Raspadskaya coal mine in Kemerovo Oblast, Russia.

According to GHGSat, greenhouse gases were entering the atmosphere at a pace of approximately 90 tonnes per hour.

It's the kind of amount that would power hundreds of thousands of households in a domestic supply.

However, in this circumstance, the methane (also known as CH4) was being lost directly into the atmosphere.

Over a 100-year span, methane has 30 times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide.
