PRICE OF FISH IN KUWAIT RISES

Kuwait City: The Sharq fish market's traders had lately learned that the pricing of imported fish had been raised. They didn't believe it until they received some cartons, though. They were taken aback by the price hike of more than 40%, which adds to the company's already-existing consumer problems. The majority of the fish cartons came from Turkey, where a dealer must pay KD 30 for a carton of 500 kg of fish and sell it for KD 33. KD 22 was the prior price, and it was sold for KD 22.5.

The trader used to acquire cartons containing 600 to 800 fish and weighing 700 or 800 kilos for KD 25 or KD 26 per carton and sell them for KD 3 per kilogramme. It is now purchased for KD 34 and sold to the general public for KD 3.4 or KD 3.750. Traders used to pay KD 27 for 1,000 fish cartons, but they now cost KD 39. Consumers pay KD 4.250 per kilogramme for them.

Norwegian fish is bought at KD 100 per carton by traders, and a kilogramme of the fish is sold for KD 5. However, the price per kilogramme has increased to KD 5,250. Both traders and customers expressed their dissatisfaction and animosity, as the traders were not notified of the steep price increase, while the customers accused the sellers of being greedy and criminals.

This caused traders to make a daily request to the relevant authorities to act, cut and control prices, protect consumers, and auction fish or prohibit the import of fish from Turkey. According to several dealers, what is happening has resulted in a loss of trust in them and a 20% drop in the number of consumers. They claimed that because there is no local competitor to the importer, they pay KD 600 in rent and KD 900 for three workers, and that the rise is due to the source. Porgy fish costs KD 4, silvery croaker costs KD 4, and greasy grouper costs KD 7. According to the trader, porgy fish costs KD 4, silvery croaker costs KD 4, and greasy grouper costs KD 7.
