DISCUSSION ON INCLUSION OF SWEETENED BEVERAGES IN SELECTIVE TAX IN KUWAIT

Kuwait City: The Ministry of Finance has launched a study to bring sweetened beverages under the purview of selective taxation. The Ministry is continuing to collaborate with numerous government entities toward this end. Government authorities are currently monitoring statistics on specific types of beverages and intend to classify energy, gas, and sweetened beverages based on usage, product type, and place of origin. 


The General Secretariat of the Cooperation Council for Arab States of the Gulf is now undertaking research on widening the scope of sweetened beverages by subjecting them to selective taxation. The Gulf Cooperation Council countries' Unified Agreement on Selective Taxation went into effect several years ago. However, it is now only valid in all Gulf countries except Kuwait. The appropriate government authorities are undertaking studies and debates on this problem in this context.
