After a red extreme heat warning was issued for the first time, with temperatures potentially reaching 40C, a national emergency was declared (104F).

On Monday and Tuesday, a region that includes London, Manchester, and York is under the Met Office's highest warning, which denotes a risk to life.

The UK Health Security Agency has also sent health and care organizations its highest level four heat alert.

It issued a warning that even "the fit and healthy" could fall ill and pass away.

Officials continued to meet on Friday and over the weekend to deliberate the response, according to Downing Street, which stated that the alert was being treated as a national emergency.
