FOOD SUBSIDY BILL JUMPS 81% TO 90.5 MILLION DINARS IN 4 MONTHS

Kuwait City: The value of the government's spending bill on subsidizing food and construction materials is witnessing a remarkable increase, after it rose by 81%, with a value of 40.6 million dinars, to reach about 90.5 million dinars in the first 4 months of the current fiscal year (2022). ), compared to spending on the same side amounting to 49.9 million dinars for the same period in 2021.


The data showed that the majority of that increase was mainly driven by the noticeable rise in construction materials subsidies, not to mention the increase in milk and child nutrition subsidies, while the decline in spending on subsidies was noticeable. Basic foodstuffs by about 1.6 million dinars.

In detail, the figures showed an increase in spending on supporting food and construction materials provided to eligible citizens, as it increased by more than 194%, with a value of 41.6 million dinars, during the period from January to the end of April 2022, where the value of that type of support during that period amounted to about 63 million dinars. Compared to 21.4 million dinars in the same period last year.

Last January recorded the highest spending rate on building materials subsidies, reaching 18.7 million dinars, compared to 5.1 million dinars in January 2021, while February 2022 recorded the second highest spending rate at 16.5 million dinars compared to 5.6 million dinars in February 2021. March came third with 15.3 million dinars, compared to 5.3 million dinars in March 2021, and April came fourth with 12.5 million dinars, compared to 5.4 million dinars in April 2021.

Expenditure on subsidies for basic foodstuffs and supplies of rice, sugar, powdered milk, vegetable oil, tomato paste, chicken, lentils and flour during the period from January to the end of April of this year witnessed a decline of about 6%, with a value of about 1.6 million dinars, to reach about 25.3 million dinars, compared to 26.9 million dinars for the same period in 2021.

The figures showed that the month of March 2022 recorded the highest spending rate on basic materials subsidies at 9.3 million dinars, compared to 5.9 million dinars in March 2021, followed by April with 5.9 million dinars, compared to With 8.8 million dinars in April 2021, then in February 2022 by 5.8 million dinars, compared to 3.5 million in February 2021, while January 2022 scored about 4.3 million dinars, compared to 8.7 million in January 2021.

The support provided to the ration card holders on milk and children's feeds increased by 37.5%, with a value of 600,000 dinars, during the first 4 months of 2022, reaching about 2.2 million dinars, compared to 1.6 million dinars in support spent on those commodities during the same period in 2021
