Kuwait City: The GCC countries collectively have more than 70 economic zones, of which 47 are located in the United Arab Emirates alone. Saudi Arabia and the Sultanate of Oman each have ten economic zones, while Kuwait has only four, Bahrain three, and Qatar two. The numbers are likely to increase, particularly in Saudi Arabia and the UAE, given the ambitious future plans of the region's nations. There were fewer than 200 special economic zones worldwide in the 1980s, but there are now more than 7,000 in roughly 140 countries, according to a recent report by MEED magazine. Special economic zones include logistic centres, free zones, and industrial clusters.

It is crucial that SEZs offer profitable solutions for the nations that invest in them as well as the businesses that use them, so the focus shouldn't just be on quantity when it comes to SEZs. Therefore, it is essential that private businesses contribute to the national economy, create jobs, stimulate innovation, promote economic diversification, and act as enabling factors for the strong economic development in exchange for SEZs' provision of financial incentives, customised costs and benefits, seamless business operations, and world-class infrastructure.
