Dozens of people killed in ethnic clashes in Indian state of Manipur

Dozens of people have been perished in ethnic conflicts in the north-eastern Indian state of Manipur. The violence started last week after an uprising by native communities against demands for tribal status made by the dominant ethnic group in the state.

Meitei people, who make up 53% of the state's population, have been clamoring for years to be recognized as a Scheduled Tribe. The communities that are already recognized as Scheduled Tribes, particularly the Kukis who reside in the hill districts, are concerned that if the Meitei's demand is granted, they may lose control over their ancestral forest area. The army announced in a statement on Sunday that more than 23,000 civilians had been saved and relocated to makeshift shelters.
