Protests break out in Israel after parliament passes law to limit Supreme court's power

  • 25/07/2023

On Monday, the Israeli parliament approved a law that eliminates the Supreme Court's authority to review government decisions, the initial step in a far-reaching judicial overhaul that has divided Israeli society and elicited harsh criticism from the United States. The bill was approved unanimously by the governing coalition, with all opposition lawmakers exiting the chamber during the vote.

A large number of protesters tried to get into the parliament building, but were blocked by barbed wire and police water cannons. At least 19 people have been arrested, according to the Israel Police.
