California to prohibit caste discrimination

  • 07/09/2023

California is the first state in the United States to enact a law prohibiting caste discrimination. The bill was passed by the state legislature after lawmakers said it would protect South Asian individuals who complain of unfair treatment.

The bill now goes to the state’s governor, who must sign it into law. In February, Seattle became the nation’s first city to prohibit caste discrimination. India’s caste system has been in place for more than three millennia, dividing Hindu society into hierarchical divisions.
