New Traffic Law Grants Police Arrest Powers from April 22

The Ministry of Interior has announced that the new traffic law will take effect on April 22, emphasizing the importance of adhering to regulations to avoid fines and legal consequences. According to a press release from the General Department of Public Relations and Security Media, the law grants police officers the authority to arrest individuals for specific traffic violations.

Under Decree-Law No. 5 of 2025, police officers can arrest anyone who:

  • Runs a red light

  • Uses a vehicle for a purpose other than its designated use

  • Transports passengers for a fee without a permit

  • Drives recklessly or negligently, endangering lives or property

  • Operates a vehicle without a valid license, a revoked or suspended license, or without the required permit

  • Drives without official license plates

  • Drives under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or psychotropic substances

  • Causes a traffic accident resulting in injury or death

  • Participates in unauthorized street racing

  • Attempts to flee the scene of an accident involving harm to an individual

  • Fails to comply with police orders to stop

  • Exceeds the speed limit by more than 50 km/h

  • Drives buggies in unauthorized areas

The Ministry of Interior urged motorists to strictly follow traffic laws to ensure public safety and avoid legal action.
