Dubai: An Abu Dhabi court has sentenced a man to life in prison for trying to defraud his son by sending a WhatsApp message claiming he was owed money in Abu Dhabi. In addition to the two-month jail term, the court also ordered the cancellation of his WhatsApp account.

The accused tried to commit fraud by contacting the phone number provided with the news of the death. Defendant contacted this number and sent a WhatsApp message to his son stating that he was a trader and that the deceased had to pay for the goods purchased. He said in the message that 900 dirhams should be transferred through the bank account as cash for the purchase of goods. The deceased's son, who received the message, asked the accused to hand over his commercial license and identity card and call him. But the accused was not ready for this.

The suspect then informed the authorities. An investigation by the Abu Dhabi Judicial Forensic and Digital Sciences team found that it was a scam. The accused was arrested and handed over to the prosecution. The court sentenced the accused to two months in jail and ordered him to delete all the data on his phone and permanently cancel his WhatsApp account.
