EUROPE AND CANADA ARE TAKING STEPS TO KEEP RUSSIAN PLANES OUT OF THEIR AIRSPACE

On Sunday, European countries and Canada took the unprecedented step of closing their airspace to Russian planes in an effort to pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin to cease his invasion of Ukraine, the worst attack on a European state since World War II.

After E.U. foreign policy leader Josep Borrell said that the European Union had chosen to block its airspace to Russian traffic, Aeroflot declared it would cancel all flights to European destinations.

According to US officials, the US is considering similar steps but has yet to make a final decision. Citizens should consider leaving Russia immediately on commercial flights, according to the US administration, noting an increase in the number of airlines cancelling flights as countries block their airspace to Russia.

The restriction on Russian planes comes as the airline sector continues to deal with the aftermath of the COVID-19 outbreak, which is currently wreaking havoc on global travel demand.

Germany, Spain and France joined Britain, the Nordics and Baltic states in declaring bans on Russian use of their airspace, a major escalation in a tactic by mostly NATO allies to wage economic war against Putin in retaliation for the invasion. The West, led by the United States, also unveiled sweeping new financial sanctions on Russia.
