By Tuesday, tens of thousands of people had been ordered to leave their homes, and many more had been warned to prepare to flee as parts of Australia's southeast coast were overwhelmed by the worst floods in decades.

Hundreds of homeowners, some with pets, were stranded on their roofs in recent days by a fast-rising river in the town of Lismore in northern New South Wales state, while scores of automobiles were trapped on a bridge in the neighbouring town of Woodburn on Monday night, with both approaches inundated.

According to officials, up to 50 individuals were rescued from the bridge early Tuesday.
