'HIGH-VOLTAGE OVERHEAD POWER LINES POSE NO RISK TO NEIGHBOURING RESIDENCES'

Kuwait City: According to Dr. Muhammad Al-Faris, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Oil, Minister of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy, studies conducted by the Ministry of Health's Radiation Protection Department have confirmed that high-voltage overhead power lines that pass near government and residential buildings cause no harm. In response to a question from MP Hamad Al-Matar, Al-Faris stated that the Ministry of Electricity and Water does not erect high-pressure power lines near homes, claiming that they are kept at a safe distance of 20 to 45 metres, depending on the voltage of the power lines, which ranges between 132, 300, and 400" kVs.

He noted that the cost of subterranean cables in some regions near homes is 20 to 25 times that of overhead lines, emphasising that a Radiation Protection Department research has not established that there is damage from high-voltage power lines located some distance away from residential areas. He noted that the high-voltage lines are installed following consultation with key government authorities such as the Kuwait Municipality, the Environment Public Authority, and the Ministry of Health, and that he has had no complaints from citizens regarding these high-voltage power lines.
