New Zealand's government announced that it will provide 4,000 special visas to refugees escaping Russia's invasion of Ukraine if they had family in the southern hemisphere country.

In support of an international assistance effort, Immigration Minister Kris Faafoi claimed it was New Zealand's largest special visa category in decades. According to UN estimates, almost 2.8 million people have fled Ukraine since Russia invaded on February 24.

"It's a two-year visa to assist individuals flee the current turmoil and seek refuge here with the aim of returning home after the war is over," Faafoi explained.

The estimated 1,600 Ukrainian-born citizens and residents in New Zealand will be able to sponsor family members for a special visa that will allow them to work for a year.
Parents, grandparents, and adult siblings or adult children and their immediate family who have escaped Ukraine are covered in the plan.

The minister stated, "New Zealand has moved fast to condemn the cruel and barbaric invasion of Ukraine."

New Zealand also announced an increase in humanitarian aid financing of NZ$4 million (US$2.7 million).

"We have responded promptly to Russia's aggression by implementing travel bans, export controls, passing the Russia Sanctions Act 2022, and giving relief funding to help essential humanitarian efforts," the minister added.
