Kuwait City: A massive fire that erupted at the famed Al-Mubarakiya market on Thursday burned scores of nearby establishments, according to the Kuwait Fire Force. According to the KFF public relations officer, up to eight squads battled the blazes amid heavy smoke from burned stores. The fire department was notified of the incident around 3:20 p.m., and blazes swiftly spread to 20 establishments, he added, indicating that the blazes engulfed the shops so quickly because they were packed with flammable commodities such as perfumes and leather products.

The firemen battled to put out the blazes despite some challenges, such as the presence of numerous people at the market, he added, advising people to remain away from the site and confirming that the firemen ringed the flames and made efforts to keep the blazes from spreading further. According to the Ministry of Health, emergency measures at general hospitals were initiated after 14 cases were recorded so far from the massive fire at Al-Mubarakiya popular market on Thursday.

According to Kuwait Fire Force, the fire gutted scores of adjacent stores, as four of the 14 cases were transferred to Amiri hospital; one to Al-Babtain Center for Burns and Plastic Surgery; and nine cases were treated on-site and are all stable, according to ministry spokesperson Dr. Abdullah Al-Sanad. Minor burns and mild suffocations were among the injuries.
