Kuwait City: According to the Cancer Awareness Nation (CAN), smoking is responsible for 25% of all fatalities in Kuwait each year. On the occasion of the inauguration of the "Gaining Health and Combating Smoking in Ramadan" programme in Al-Surra Walkway, which was organised by CAN in collaboration with the Anti-Smoking Team and the Olympic Walking Committee, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of CAN and the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Kuwait Society for the Control of Smoking and Cancer, Dr. Khaled Al-Saleh, issued a press statement.

Al-Saleh added that there is a prediction study on the financial weight of smoking's detrimental consequences for all Gulf countries, based on data from the worldwide burden of disease, which is comparable to around 1% of the Gulf countries' GDP. He emphasised the need of implementing financially sponsored awareness programmes and raising the price of cigarettes by 50% to save over a thousand individuals each year while lowering health-care spending by around 33%.

He noted that the most essential method of prevention is to stop smoking, which is responsible for around 80% of lung cancer and 60% of head and neck malignancies. According to Al-Saleh, the campaign "Gaining Health and Combating Smoking in Ramadan," which runs through the 20th of Ramadan, attempts to persuade smokers to quit smoking and start walking instead.
