UAE APPROVES THIRD UNIT AT BARAKAH NUCLEAR POWER PLANT

Abu Dhabi: The UAE Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation has granted the third unit of the Barakah nuclear power project in Abu Dhabi a licence. Permission to operate for 60 years has been given. The nuclear power plant currently has two units in operation.


The commissioning and operation of the third unit at the Barakah nuclear power project was approved yesterday. In February 2020, the first unit was approved, and in March 2021, the second unit was approved. In addition to the third unit, which has been licensed after completion of inspection, the fourth unit's construction work is currently 92% complete. The construction of the Barakah nuclear power facility is 97 percent complete, according to the UAE's official news agency. 

The United Arab Emirates is the first Arab country to produce nuclear energy for peaceful reasons. "This is another another historic occasion for the UAE," said Ambassador Hamad Al Kabi, Deputy Chairman of the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation Board of Management and Permanent Representative of the International Atomic Energy Agency in the UAE. He went on to say that the key to success is 14 years of hard effort.
