SWEDISH PM STEPS DOWN AFTER VICTORY FOR RIGHT-WING PARTIES

After losing the election on Sunday, Sweden's prime minister announced her resignation.

With 99% of the votes counted, Magdalena Andersson's center-left bloc was defeated by a group of right-wing parties by a mere 176 seats to 173.

Ulf Kristersson, the leader of the moderate party, will likely now form the government.

His right-wing coalition includes the Sweden Democrats, an extreme right party that has fought against the rise in gang violence.

It is a major setback for Andersson's Social Democrats, who picked up support from the previous election and are still the country's largest party. But in Sweden, it is bloc politics that usually decides who gets into power and the right bloc has scored a razor-thin majority.

The final result is still to be confirmed after a recount, which is standard practice in Sweden.

Ms Andersson accepted defeat at a news conference on Wednesday. She formally offered her resignation on Thursday.
