STORM NALGAE KILLS DOZENS IN FLOODS AND MUDSLIDES IN PHILIPPINES

Officials say a severe tropical storm killed at least 45 people in the Philippines, causing floods and landslides in southern provinces. Storm Nalgae wreaked the most havoc on Mindanao's Maguindanao province. There is widespread flooding in and around Cotabato.

Nalgae is moving north, and the capital of Manila is expecting heavy rain. Many bodies were recovered from thick mud after landslides. Storm winds are gusting up to 95 km/h (59 mph).

The Coast Guard has halted ferry services throughout the archipelago, where many people travel by boat every day. Many people are being evacuated to shelters by the Coast Guard. The storm began with heavy rain on Thursday and is expected to peak this weekend. Some schools and buses have also been forced to close due to the storm.

Earlier on Saturday, officials reported 72 deaths, but that figure has since been revised downward.

Every year, the Philippines is hit by 20 typhoons or tropical storms. They originate in the Pacific Ocean, and Nalgae is not particularly strong; however, it is very large, covering much of the country, and very wet.
