FIVE LIONS FROM SYDNEY'S TARONGA ZOO'S EXHIBIT ESCAPED

An Australian zoo experienced a brief emergency after five lions broke out of their enclosure. One adult and four cubs were seen outside their enclosure on Wednesday around 6:30 local time at Sydney's Taronga Zoo (22:30 GMT Tuesday).

A spokesman said that after the zoo was placed on lockdown and one cub had to be tranquillized, all of the lions had been secured in a matter of minutes. Nobody was hurt. The reason for the escape is still unknown.

However, Simon Duffy, the executive director of the zoo, called it a "significant incident" that would be looked into.

According to him, the lions entered a small area "adjacent" to their exhibit, which was only a hundred metres away from where visitors were spending the night at the zoo. At the time, the main zoo was closed.
