Pakistan's ex-PM Imran Khan arrested, protests break out

  • 09/05/2023

Imran Khan, the former prime minister of Pakistan, was detained on Tuesday as he entered a plea in several graft cases. This dramatic upsurge of political unrest in the nation caused outrage by Imran Khan's supporters in at least three cities.

According to Fawad Chaudhry, a senior official with Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, security personnel from the National Accountability Bureau dragged Khan from the Islamabad High Court. Khan was overthrown in a no-confidence vote in April 2022 but continues to be the head of the opposition. The 71-year-old former cricket star's arrest was described by Chaudhry as "an abduction." Following that, a fight started between Khan's supporters and the police outside the court.
