Kuwait implements new regulations to safeguard consumers against trademark fraud

  • 23/05/2024

Rashid Al-Owaihan, the Controller of Trademarks and Patents at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, highlighted the negative impact of trademark imitation, pointing out its role in misleading consumers and perpetuating commercial fraud by selling substandard, fake, and unauthorized products, as reported by Al-Jarida daily. This not only affects consumers but also causes financial harm to original brand owners and businesses.

As per the law, copying trademarks can lead to imprisonment ranging from one month to three years or fines to cover the damages caused. In terms of the ministry's strategies to improve its functions, Al-Owaihan mentioned the ongoing initiatives to enhance the monitoring and safeguarding of industrial intellectual property. This involves establishing a comprehensive system to electronically detect and prosecute violators, ensuring strict compliance with legal regulations.
