Pope Francis Faces Health Setback Amid Battle with Double Pneumonia

  • 03/03/2025

Pope Francis encountered two severe respiratory episodes on Monday due to a significant buildup of mucus in his airways, the Vatican reported. As a result, he required non-invasive mechanical ventilation to assist his breathing. The pontiff also suffered a bronchospasm, similar to an asthma attack, prompting doctors to conduct two bronchoscopies to clear his air passages. Despite the treatment, his condition remains delicate, and his prognosis is still uncertain.

Medical experts overseeing the Pope’s care believe the latest respiratory complications are a natural response to his body fighting the infection. While his blood test results remain stable, his overall condition remains a cause for concern. His latest health setback follows an earlier bronchospasm on Friday, after which he was temporarily placed on ventilation. Over the weekend, his condition seemed to improve, and he was receiving oxygen through a nasal tube, but Monday’s relapse has raised fresh worries about his recovery.

Pope Francis has faced recurring health issues in recent years, particularly respiratory infections due to a past lung surgery. His hospitalization on February 14 marks his longest public absence since the beginning of his papacy in 2013. Double pneumonia, a serious infection affecting both lungs, poses significant challenges for his breathing, and doctors have not yet confirmed when he might be discharged.
