New York: A tragic helicopter crash in the Hudson River on Thursday afternoon claimed the lives of six people, including three children, New York City authorities confirmed. The Bell 206 helicopter, carrying a pilot and a visiting family from Spain, plunged into the river during a sightseeing tour.
The helicopter had taken off from Manhattan’s downtown Skyport around 3:00 p.m., flew around the city, and was returning when it lost control and crashed near a Hoboken pier. Witnesses described seeing the rotor blade break mid-air before the aircraft spiraled into the water.
Emergency responders from New York and New Jersey, including the NYPD, FDNY, and marine units, swiftly launched a rescue operation. Divers recovered all six victims from the wreckage, but none survived.
“Four were pronounced dead at the scene, and the other two were later declared deceased at the hospital,” said NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch.
Mayor Eric Adams called the crash “heartbreaking,” and photos from the scene showed parts of the helicopter’s skids sticking out of the water. The FAA and NTSB have initiated a full investigation into the cause of the incident.
