Taller Than Eiffel Tower: China’s Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge to Open Soon

Beijing: China is set to unveil the world’s tallest bridge, the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge, later this year. Rising to an astonishing height of 2,050 feet (625 meters), the bridge surpasses the Eiffel Tower by over 200 meters and is a monumental engineering achievement.

Spanning the Huajiang Grand Canyon in Guizhou province — often referred to as “Earth’s crack” — the bridge will drastically reduce travel time across the canyon from one hour to just one minute.

The project, costing £216 million (approximately ₹2,200 crore), began in 2022 and is set to complete in just three years. Footage released by Chinese media shows the final touches being applied to the bridge, which is constructed from around 22,000 metric tonnes of steel — nearly the weight of three Eiffel Towers.

Chief Engineer Li Zhao shared his pride in the accomplishment, stating, “Watching the bridge grow day by day and finally stand tall above the canyon gives me a profound sense of achievement.”

The bridge cements China’s position as a leader in high-altitude bridge construction. The country already houses nearly half of the world’s 100 tallest bridges, including the previous record-holder, the Beipanjiang Bridge (1,854 feet).

Beyond transportation, the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge is also envisioned as a tourist destination, with plans for residential spaces, a glass walkway, and possibly the world’s highest bungee jump, offering breathtaking views of the canyon.
