Bangkok: At least five police officers have died after a small aircraft belonging to the Royal Thai Police crashed into the sea near the popular tourist destination of Hua Hin on Friday morning.
According to officials, the Viking DHC-6 Twin Otter was on a test flight in preparation for parachute training when it went down shortly after 8 a.m. The crash occurred approximately 100 meters off the coast near Hua Hin Airport in Prachuap Khiri Khan province.
Images from the scene show the aircraft's fuselage broken in two and partially submerged in the water. All six individuals on board were police officers.
Initial reports said all six had died, but Royal Thai Police spokesperson Archayon Kraithong later confirmed that five officers died while one remains in critical condition at the hospital.
The cause of the crash is currently under investigation.
