Kuwait's General Authority for Food and Nutrition has implemented new regulations prohibiting ten categories of unhealthy food products in school cafeterias for the upcoming academic year. The banned items include soft drinks, energy drinks, caffeinated beverages, foods high in sugar and fat, trans fats, fast food, canned noodles, artificial colors, high-calorie sauces, and processed meats.
Authority spokesperson Dr. Shaima Al-Asfour has explained that 36 companies applied for cafeteria operation licenses, with only 20 meeting the strict requirements outlined in Ministerial Resolution No. 15 of 2025. The approved investors and companies will manage cafeteria operations under direct supervision from the authority, ensuring compliance with health and nutritional standards.
The new regulations represent a pioneering development project aimed at enhancing student health and promoting sound nutritional behaviors. This initiative supports national efforts to combat childhood obesity and prevent non-communicable diseases, aligning with Kuwait's 2035 vision and sustainable development goals. Investors bear full responsibility for providing permitted food items and maintaining approved health standards throughout their operations.
