Kuwait's First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Sheikh Fahad Yousef Al-Sabah, has announced a major success in the nation's war on drugs, claiming a 90% reduction in the quantity of narcotics entering the country compared to the previous year. He described the ministry's efforts as a "real war" against drug dealers who target Kuwaiti society. This announcement was made during the inauguration of a newly rehabilitated wing at the national addiction treatment center.
Alongside this achievement, the minister revealed that a new draft drug law is set to be issued soon. This legislation represents a significant shift in policy, introducing much harsher penalties. The most severe of these could include the death penalty for individuals convicted of drug trafficking, underscoring the government's zero-tolerance approach.
Sheikh Fahad Al-Yousef credited this success to the integrated efforts of the country's security and health institutions and praised the cooperation of the public, including parents and teachers, in reporting cases. He also highlighted the international recognition of these efforts, noting that the Ministry of Interior recently received two awards from the Council of Arab Interior Ministers for its work in combating drugs.
