Health officials in Kuwait have revealed alarming statistics on smoking and cancer rates in the Gulf region. According to Dr. Amani Al-Basmi of the Kuwait Cancer Control Center, Kuwait has the highest prevalence of male smokers in the GCC at 41%, compared to 35% in the UAE and 33% in Bahrain.
Globally, smoking causes 8.9 million deaths yearly. In the Gulf, it is responsible for 55.7% to 78.8% of lung cancer cases in men. Experts at a recent cancer awareness workshop also highlighted the severe risks for women. Dr. Hessa Al-Shaheen stated that smoking increases the risk of breast, lung, and cervical cancers and negatively impacts fertility.
Further emphasizing the danger, Dr. Ahmed Saad Al Saleh noted that secondhand smoke increases a woman's risk of breast cancer by 24%. The workshop concluded with a call for stronger regional cooperation to combat smoking and raise awareness about its direct connection to the rising cancer rates in the Middle East.
