SOUTH KOREA RECORDS WORLD'S LOWEST FERTILITY RATE AGAIN

  • 25/08/2022

South Korea has once again recorded the world's lowest fertility rate, with the figure falling to an all-time low.

In 2018, the country's fertility rate fell below one child per woman for the first time.

However, figures released by the government on Wednesday showed that the figure had dropped to 0.81, a three-point decrease from the previous year and the sixth consecutive decline.

In comparison, the global average for the most advanced economies is 1.6 children.

Countries require at least two children per couple - a 2.1 rate - to maintain their population size without migration.

According to the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development), fertility rates have "markedly declined" over the last six decades.
