MINISTRY OF PUBLIC HEALTH CONFIRMS A CASE OF MIDDLE EAST RESPIRATORY SYNDROME IN QATAR

Doha: The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) of Qatar has declared a verified case of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS).


According to a statement posted on the MoPH website, the patient is a 50-year-old male resident who had direct contact with camels.

"The patient has been admitted to the hospital to receive the necessary medical care in accordance with the national protocol for dealing with confirmed or suspected cases of the disease," according to the Ministry.

It went on to say that everyone who had contact with the patient "is free of symptoms and will be followed for 14 days in accordance with national procedures."

The Ministry of Public Health, in partnership with the Ministry of Environment, confirmed that it is taking all necessary preventive and precautionary steps to manage the disease and prevent it from spreading.

MERS is a viral respiratory disease caused by a coronavirus (MERS-CoV), although it varies from the novel Coronavirus known as MERS-CoV. (COVID19).

Both viruses differ in terms of infection source, mechanism of transmission, and disease severity. 

The Ministry of Public Health urged all members of the public, particularly those with chronic diseases or immunodeficiency disorders, to practise good hygiene. These precautions include washing hands with soap and water on a regular basis, using hand sanitizers, avoiding contact with camels, and seeking medical attention if you experience symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, or shortness of breath.
