Qatar Introduces UPI Payments, Easing Transactions for Indian Visitors and Residents

In a significant move for the Indian diaspora and tourists, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) system has been officially launched in Qatar. This initiative is a collaboration between NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) and Qatar National Bank (QNB). The service will initially be available at duty-free stores, enabling users to make payments by scanning QR codes, thereby reducing the need to carry physical currency.

The introduction of UPI is strategically aimed at enhancing the travel experience for the large number of tourists visiting from India, who represent the second-largest tourist group for Qatar. Officials from QNB expressed that this step will not only provide better facilities for Indian visitors but also promote cashless transactions, benefiting Qatar's broader economic sector.

This expansion into Qatar is part of NPCI International's larger goal to build a global payments network. The launch follows the successful introduction of UPI in the UAE, signaling a growing international acceptance of the Indian digital payment platform and paving the way for its future rollout in other commercial establishments across Qatar.
