The Saudi Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture has rolled out new regulations governing the packaging and labeling of fruits and vegetables in local markets. The updated rules, which came into effect on September 18, 2025, are designed to ensure product quality, safety, and transparency. Retail units must now carry detailed labels including the product name, gross weight, date of packaging, country of origin, agricultural registration number, distributor or manufacturer details, and official logo.
The ministry emphasized that only durable, recyclable, and food-safe packaging materials such as plastic or corrugated cardboard can be used. These packages must provide proper ventilation and, where cardboard is used, come with reinforced lids to withstand storage and transportation. To minimize contamination, cardboard boxes stacked on pallets should be covered externally, while inner surfaces may be lined with moisture-resistant materials without affecting the produce quality.
Authorities stressed that compliance with the new rules is mandatory for producers and distributors, highlighting that strict standards are vital to maintaining the integrity of the food supply chain. By implementing these measures, Saudi Arabia aims to strengthen consumer confidence and align with global best practices in food safety and agricultural trade.
