Plan to Lower Voting Age to 18 Could Be Suspended in Bahrain

Manama: A proposal to lower Bahrain’s voting age from 20 to 18 may be temporarily put on hold. The Shura Council is set to vote on a suspension request filed by five of its members, halting efforts to implement the change before the 2026 parliamentary and municipal elections.

The vote will be overseen by Dalal Al-Saeed, chairwoman of the Legislative and Legal Affairs Committee. The proposal involves amending the Political Rights Law, the Municipal Council Election Law, and the Municipal Law to expand voting rights to 18-year-olds.

This comes nearly two decades after Bahrain last lowered the voting age from 21 to 20 in 2006, following similar legislative efforts. If the suspension is approved, it could delay plans to extend voting rights to younger citizens for the upcoming elections.
