Abu Dhabi: The UAE is set to launch trial runs for its first flying taxi in Al Ain this July, with full service expected to begin in Abu Dhabi by the end of 2025. The initiative, led by Archer Aviation in collaboration with the UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), marks a significant step in transforming urban mobility in the region.
The flying taxi, an electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, is capable of flying at altitudes between 500 and 3,000 meters. It is designed to drastically reduce travel times—for example, trips that currently take two to three hours by car between Dubai and Abu Dhabi may soon take just 15 to 20 minutes by air.
Archer Aviation CEO Adam Goldstein said the company has been working closely with GCAA for years and is in the final phase of receiving full regulatory approval. “We’re excited to be launching the world’s first flying taxi service here. Starting with a modest rollout, we aim to demonstrate the safety, silence, and community-friendly nature of this new mode of travel,” he said.
The UAE has converted the Abu Dhabi Cruise Terminal helipad into a hybrid heliport to support the flying taxi operations. Dedicated air corridors have also been mapped out by the GCAA for safe travel.
Passengers will be able to book rides through Archer’s app or a government-provided application. Initial fares are expected to start at AED 300 for intra-city travel, although final pricing has yet to be confirmed.
This project places the UAE among the world’s pioneers in adopting flying taxi technology, combining innovation, speed, and sustainability to redefine urban transportation.
