Abu Dhabi's Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) has introduced a new policy requiring all private and educational partnership nurseries and kindergartens to allocate 240 minutes (4 hours) per week for Arabic language instruction starting from the 2025–2026 academic year. The initiative applies to Pre-KG through KG2 classes and will increase to 300 minutes (5 hours) per week from the 2026–2027 academic year.
The policy is designed to ensure that all children—whether native speakers or first-time Arabic learners—receive consistent, high-quality language support during their most critical years of development. ADEK emphasizes that early childhood is the most effective period for language acquisition, supported by research findings.
Arabic will be taught using engaging methods like games, songs, and storytelling to make learning interactive and enjoyable. Despite many children speaking Arabic at home, recent surveys show a lack of confidence in using the language. The policy also aims to foster stronger collaboration between schools and families to bridge this gap and reinforce Arabic as a vital part of cultural identity and values.
