Shaikh Al Mahfoudh bin Bayyah, Secretary-General of the Abu Dhabi Forum for Peace, delivered a keynote address at the Inter-Parliamentary Union Conference held at the Italian Parliament in Rome. Speaking during a special session themed “Lessons from the Marrakesh Declaration (2016): Supporting the Rights of Religious Minorities,” he emphasized the significance of the Declaration as a milestone for religious pluralism and equal citizenship in Muslim-majority communities.
He described the Declaration, originally launched through UAE-Moroccan collaboration, as rooted in Islamic legal principles and inspired by the historical Covenant of Medina, promoting fair coexistence among diverse groups. Shaikh Al Mahfoudh stressed that the Declaration was a timely response to extremist distortions of Islamic values and remains a credible reference for global human rights initiatives.
He called for moving from principles to practical policy, urging parliaments and religious leaders to work together to implement these ideals in law and community life. The session included international speakers and reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to promoting dialogue, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence worldwide.
