UAE Cracks Down on Social Media Impersonation with Hefty Fines and Jail Time

The UAE has issued a stern warning against social media impersonation and cyber fraud, outlining severe penalties for offenders. According to Federal Law, individuals found guilty of impersonation or using forged documents online face a minimum of one year in prison and a fine ranging from 250,000 to one million dirhams. The law specifically targets those who use false names or identities on the internet to deceive others.

An ongoing public awareness campaign highlights the common tactics used by these fraudsters. These methods include impersonating official employees by calling from spoofed numbers, sending fake emails from seemingly legitimate company domains, and exploiting promotional seasons by falsely notifying victims they have won prizes to trick them into revealing bank details or paying fees.

Authorities attribute the success of these scams to a lack of public awareness, poor understanding of data protection, and the victim's desire for quick financial gain. To avoid becoming a victim, the public is advised to never share bank details or personal information in response to unsolicited prize notifications, verify any offers directly with the promoting company, and remember that legitimate prizes never require an upfront payment.
