Qatar Launches Award to Boost Private Sector Indigenization

Doha: The Qatari Cabinet has approved a new initiative titled the 'Qatar Award for Localization in the Private Sector' to encourage greater employment of Qatari nationals in private enterprises. The decision was passed during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani at the Amiri Diwan.

The award is part of Qatar’s broader Vision 2030 and its Third National Development Plan, which aim to strengthen job security and diversify the country's workforce. The initiative also supports a government directive issued last year mandating Qatari participation in the private sector.

In its initial phase, the indigenization drive targets eight sectors: manufacturing, tourism, IT, education, healthcare, logistics, agriculture, and finance. The Qatar Award will recognize private sector institutions that excel in creating job opportunities for Qatari nationals, as well as local employees who perform exceptionally in their roles.

The initiative seeks to foster healthy competition among businesses, encouraging more active involvement in national employment goals. The Ministry of Labor reported that around sixty companies have already pledged support since the draft decision was announced last October.

Authorities have also made it clear that non-compliance with the localization mandates could result in penalties, including fines and imprisonment.
