Doha: In a vital clash for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Asian Qualifiers, Qatar emerged victorious against Iran with a narrow 1-0 win at the Jassim bin Hamad Stadium in Doha. Defender Pedro Miguel (Pedro Correia) scored the decisive goal in the 41st minute, taking advantage of Iran being reduced to 10 men after Milad Mohammadi was shown a red card.

Iran, who were unbeaten in the group until this match, struggled to recover after the red card and Qatar took control, aided by strong home support. The win places Qatar in fourth position in Group A with 13 points, ensuring their progression to the fourth round of the Asian Qualifiers.

This result also ended Kyrgyzstan’s hopes of advancing, as they were held to a 2-2 draw by North Korea. Meanwhile, Uzbekistan qualified as the second team from the group after a goalless draw with the UAE, who now trail Qatar by just one point.

According to the qualification format, only group winners qualify directly for the World Cup, while third and fourth-placed teams move on to compete in the fourth round for the remaining two slots.

Qatar now advances to the playoffs, where they will continue their bid for a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026.
